Bluebeard Kerry Blue Terriers
The Kerries of Hitching Post Farm

Our History

As I was walking, I felt a tap on the shoulder, I turned around and got a huge kiss. It was February, 1961 at the Associated Terrier Clubs show in New York.... and so began a 52 year love affair with the Kerry Blue Terrier.

Being newly married and commuting from Long Island into Manhattan daily, it was not yet our time to get a dog. That summer, we rented a weekend place in New Milford, Connecticut. The Connecticut State Fair was in Danbury, just a few miles away and there, in the midst of all the booths, was a woman with a little Robin Hood type hat standing in her Kerry Blue Terrier Booth. This was Jean Underhill, and as soon as she knew we were fans of the breed, she closed the booth and took us home.

At that time she had many dogs, each running in it's own large paddock. She let us play with all of them.

In 1964, when I was expecting my first child, we called Mrs. Underhill, looking for a Kerry. Although she had none available at the time, she recommended a breeder in New York, named Patrick Corless. We called Pat and got our first Kerry, Balinrobe's P. J. Gilhooley (Gilly). Our agreement was that we would try to show him and that we would also try to learn to properly groom a Kerry.
